Adoption

Regardless of the option you choose, investigating adoption is a thoughtful and compassionate decision. You can take your time, because exploring adoption requires no initial commitments. There are no fees in order to place your baby up for adoption, and adoption agencies may be able to provide medical financial assistance for your pregnancy. There are three types of adoption arrangements you can choose from: open adoption, semi-open adoption, or closed adoption. Our supportive staff at Options can offer referrals and support as you learn about the various adoption options available.

Open Adoption

In an open adoption, there is potential for a high level of communication between you and the family who is raising your child. You have an opportunity to work together with the agency and potential adoptive parents to create a plan that may help you maintain a relationship with your child.

Semi-Open Adoption

In a semi-open adoption, you would receive regular updates about how your child is doing without being involved in their life. This is usually mediated through the adoption agency rather than directly with the adoptive parents. This type of relationship can be helpful if you want to be able to move on in your life, but you also would like to have peace of mind knowing that your child is doing well.

Closed Adoption

In a closed adoption, you have no contact with either the adoptive parents or your child after adoption. This can be helpful to move forward with your life. Closed adoption used to be the default, but fewer are choosing this option today, as it can be emotionally challenging for both the birth parent and the adopted child.
